THE CHALLENGE
Danida Fellowship Centre wanted to develop a digital learning programme on the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) that would make human rights principles concrete and applicable in practice. A key challenge was translating complex principles such as participation, accountability, non-discrimination and transparency into situations where participants could actively engage with and apply them.
At the same time, the target audience was international and worked across different political, cultural and institutional contexts. This created a need for realistic case studies that could make the topics relevant without linking the learning to specific countries or real-life events.

THE SOLUTION
We developed a seven-module digital learning programme combining introductory content with case studies, scenarios, perspective shifts, choices and feedback. The programme covered topics including participation, accountability, non-discrimination and transparency.
A key approach was to make the cases and stories fictional while basing them on real-world issues and situations. We developed the fictional country of Rignovia, for example, where participants could explore realistic dilemmas without linking them to specific countries or actual events.
In the case studies, participants took on different roles and were encouraged to actively engage with each situation and consider the perspectives of different stakeholders. Grape was responsible for the pedagogical structure, development and dramaturgy of the cases and scenarios, as well as the scripts, learning texts, questions and feedback.
THE RESULT
A seven-module digital learning programme that combines professional knowledge with realistic case studies and active participation.
- Complex HRBA principles are translated into concrete situations
- Fictional case studies allow participants to explore real-world dilemmas without linking them to specific countries or events
- Participants can explore issues from the perspectives of different stakeholders
- Role-based scenarios make the learning more action-oriented
- The programme is hosted on DFC’s own learning platform
