Why video often makes learning passive<\/h2>\n

1) Attention decreases the longer the video<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This isn’t a motivation problem – it’s a design reality. Data from large online
\nlearning platforms shows that engagement drops as videos get longer, with significant
\ndrop-off as the length increases (often citing a clear drop-off at around six minutes in larger
\ndatasets). An often cited reference is Guo, Kim & Rubin’s edX study<\/a>.
\nBut in the workplace, learning is typically even more interrupted: between meetings, on mobile and
\nwith many distractions. That’s why Grape’s in-house e-learning experts recommend an
\neven shorter rule of thumb:

2) Watching video feels productive (but doesn’t necessarily change behavior)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Video is easy to consume and can give a sense of “I get it” that doesn’t
\nhold up in practice. Passive exposure is not the same as learning. A useful,
\nevidence-based overview is Brame’s guide to effective training videos<\/a>, which suggests that video
\nworks best when it is designed to promote active learning, not passive viewing.
