Someone says \u201che\u2019s not breathing properly\u201d. Another is already calling for help, but the ambulance is still minutes away.  <\/p>\n<p>In those minutes, the most important thing happens. First aid is not about being an expert. It\u2019s about being able to act before help arrives.  <\/p>\n<h2>Denmark in numbers: the minutes are your opponent<\/h2>\n<p>In Denmark, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sst.dk\/media\/1qthhiyb\/faktaark_genoplivning_opdateret-juni-2023.pdf?\">around 5,000 people a year suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospital.<\/a> The Danish Health Authority points to three facts that make \u201cthe first minutes\u201d a workplace issue: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sst.dk\/vidensbase\/sygdomme-og-behandling\/hjertesygdom\/hjertestartere-og-genoplivning?\">6 minutes<\/a> without help, the brain can start to suffer damage<\/li>\n<li>Most people suffer permanent injuries or die if they don\u2019t get help within about 10 minutes<\/li>\n<li>The chance of survival decreases by approximately 10% per minute without resuscitation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s why HR and L&#038;D can\u2019t just \u2018have something on the wall\u2019. Preparedness is a shared reflex or nothing. <\/p>\n<h2>Why people \u201cfreeze\u201d (and why it\u2019s perfectly normal)<\/h2>\n<p>When something becomes urgent, many people freeze. Not because they don\u2019t care, but because the brain is looking for a next step and can\u2019t find it fast enough. <\/p>\n<p>This is where training makes all the difference: it changes \u201cWhat if I do something wrong?\u201d with a simple script for your body to follow when your heart rate increases:<\/p>\n<p>Call 1-1-2 \u2192 start CPR \u2192 use AED\/defibrillator \u2192 stop life-threatening bleeding \u2192 continue until help takes over.<\/p>\n<h2>The first 60 seconds: a script everyone can use<\/h2>\n<p>When the going gets tough, it\u2019s not \u201cmore knowledge\u201d you need. You need a consistent process. Here\u2019s a practical script that works in a workplace context:  <\/p>\n<h3>1) Take control right away<\/h3>\n<p>Say out loud:<br \/>\n\u201cYou call 1-1-2. You get the defibrillator. You make room.\u201d<br \/>\nIt reduces chaos, clarifies roles and gets more people moving.<\/p>\n<h3>2) Check briefly: is the person responding? is the person breathing normally? <\/h3>\n<p>If the person is unconscious and not breathing normally, you need to act as in cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n<h3>3) Call 1-1-2 (or confirm that it is done)<\/h3>\n<p>An important reassurance: The on-call center can guide you in resuscitation over the phone.<\/p>\n<h3>4) Start CPR and stay focused<\/h3>\n<p>The most important thing is to get started and keep going until help takes over.<\/p>\n<h3>5) Use the defibrillator\/AED as soon as it is available<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to do one thing today, it\u2019s this: make sure everyone knows where it hangs and that more people dare to use it.<br \/>\nYou can check the nearest location via <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hjertestarter.dk\/find-hjertestarter?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">hjertestarter.dk.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Witnesses make a huge difference even when response time isn\u2019t perfect<\/h2>\n<p>A large, nationwide survey based on the<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27881566\/?\">Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry (Danish Cardiac Arrest Registry)<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nshows that witnessed CPR is associated with significantly higher 30-day survival and that the difference actually increases the longer the response time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For response time within 5 minutes, survival was 14.5% vs. 6.3% (\u2248 2.3\u00d7 higher)<\/li>\n<li>For response time within 10 minutes, survival was 6.7% vs. 2.2% (\u2248 3.0\u00d7 higher)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Translated into workplace language: When someone dares to take action, it can move the outcome even when the ambulance is not there \u201cfast enough\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Early defibrillators can go even further<\/h2>\n<p>When cardiac arrest is caused by a shockable rhythm, early defibrillation is crucial.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30148564\/?\">The European Resuscitation Council (ERC)<\/a> suggests that defibrillation within 3-5 minutes can provide survival rates as high as 50-70%.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why \u201cdefibrillator on the wall\u201d is only half of it. The other half is:<br \/>\nDoes everyone know where it is and dare they use it? <\/p>\n<h2>The workplace must plan first aid<\/h2>\n<p>First aid is not just \u201cnice to have\u201d.
