And there\u2019s an element of time pressure: \u201cI\u2019m going to a meeting \u2013 please send me\u2026\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{{{wpml_tag_12}}}&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240{{{wpml_tag_13}}}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is exactly why AI phishing works now.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{{{wpml_tag_17}}}&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240{{{wpml_tag_18}}}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-dynmedia-1.microsoft.com\/is\/content\/microsoftcorp\/microsoft\/msc\/documents\/presentations\/CSR\/Microsoft-Digital-Defense-Report-2025.pdf\">Microsoft <\/a><\/em>describes in Digital Defense Report 2025 that AI-automated phishing achieves significantly higher click-through rates than classic phishing attempts (54% vs. 12% in their example), not because people have become dumber, but because the attacks have become better at sounding \u201cinternal\u201d and credible.<\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h3>\u201cThis happened to me\u201d (and why it matters)<\/h3>\n<p>I myself received an email pretending to be our CEO at Grape, Peter Hindkj\u00e6r. It didn\u2019t have the old \u201cscam signals\u201d (bad language, strange formatting, etc.). It just sounded\u2026 plausible.  <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35903\" src=\"https:\/\/grapenordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-10.45.16-286x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grapenordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-10.45.16-286x300.png 286w, https:\/\/grapenordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-10.45.16-768x806.png 768w, https:\/\/grapenordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-10.45.16.png 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The point is not to expose anyone. The point is to show employees that it\u2019s no longer safe to trust the \u2018vibe\u2019 of an email. <\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h2>Why the old advice no longer protects you<\/h2>\n<p>The classic advice \u201cfind spelling mistakes and bad grammar\u201d falls apart when generative AI can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>write flawless Danish<\/li>\n<li>mimic an internal tone-of-voice<\/li>\n<li>Make the message short and \u201cbusy\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Hit the right time (e.g. just before meetings, deadlines, payroll runs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And as phishing becomes harder to spot visually, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/guidance\/phishing\">the countermeasure necessarily<\/a> becomes more process and behavior-based: pause \u2192 verify \u2192 report.<\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h2>Compromising emails are expensive<\/h2>\n<h3>(and they don\u2019t require advanced hacking skills)<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Business Email Compromise (BEC) is, at its core, social engineering: someone posing as a trusted person (boss, supplier, finance) to get someone to transfer money or share sensitive information. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/how-we-can-help-you\/scams-and-safety\/common-frauds-and-scams\/business-email-compromise\">The FBI describes BEC<\/a> as one of the most financially damaging forms of online crime.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the FBI\u2019s IC3 report shows that the total reported losses to cybercrime reached a record level (referred to as $16.6 billion in the report), and the FBI\u2019s own press release highlights the same magnitude.<\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h2>The new baseline rule:<\/h2>\n<h3>Anything with money, access or data must be verified out-of-band<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If a message is about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>money \/ payment changes \/ account numbers<\/li>\n<li>Access \/ MFA codes \/ credentials<\/li>\n<li>sensitive files \/ personal data \/ contracts<\/li>\n<li>\u201cquick exceptions\u201d from normal process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026the employee must have one fixed reflex:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pause \u2192 Verify \u2192 Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Verify out-of-band means: verify via another channel you already trust (known phone number from the directory, existing internal thread, approved workflow), not by replying to the email or calling a number in the signature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/guidance\/phishing\">NCSC<\/a> recommends making processes more resilient by ensuring that important email requests are verified via another form of communication.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/news-events\/alerts\/2015\/06\/24\/business-email-compromise-continues-swindle-and-defraud-us-businesses\">CISA<\/a> recommends similar out-of-band verification for wire\/payment requests that appear to come from management.<\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h2>Three AI scenarios every employee should train<\/h2>\n<h3>(again and again)<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1) \u201cCan you update the payment details?&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>The classic, but now written in perfect tone, often with better timing and more context.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trained reflex:<\/strong> No payment changes without verified process + approvals (and always out-of-band).<\/p>\n<h3>2) Email bombing \u2192 Team messages \u2192 \u201cIT-support\u201d impersonation<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft describes attack chains where email bombing is used to create stress and chaos, after which the attacker switches channels (e.g. Teams) and poses as IT support to gain remote access.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trained reflex:<\/strong> Sudden flood of emails + \u201csupport\u201d making contact = stop, verify via official IT channel and report.<\/p>\n<h3>3) Leadership impersonation with video\/voice (deepfakes)<\/h3>\n<p>The Arup case from Hong Kong is a brutal example: deepfake video\/voice in a meeting led to transfers of approximately US$25 million. <\/p>\n<p>Trained reflex: Even \u201cface\/voice\u201d never overrides process at high risk.<\/p>\n<div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h2>Why awareness should be a practice, not a policy<\/h2>\n<p>Most organizations already have an IT security policy.<\/p>\n<p>What is often missing is a shared muscle memory under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why scenario-based training works better than \u201cread and confirm\u201d.
